17 Sep Bridgend name team to face Carmarthen Quins
Bridgend Ravens host Carmarthen Quins in their first Indigo Premiership Cup match on Saturday afternoon (2:30pm).
Ironically, The Timbuild Brewery Field was the venue for both sides final competitive match before the Coronavirus lockdown in March 2020; the visitors winning by 20pts to 14. Bridgend crossed twice that afternoon through Dewi Cross and Adam Jones, with Owen Howe kicking two conversions. But a late try from James Newnian stole victory for the Quins.
Carmarthen’s pre season has been a successful one so far; victories over Aberyswyth (56-12), Chinnor (17-15) and Llandovery (33-14) came before they lost out to Cardiff on Saturday (10-13). They finished the cancelled season of 2019/20 in second place and will have their eyes on challenging for silverware this campaign.
Bridgend’s latest pre-season fixture, at home to Newport, saw another second half comeback in vain. Trailing 21pts to 7 at half time, the Ravens scored tries through Caine Woolerton and Edd Howley to pull within a score. A late Newport penalty try, and a yellow card for Tom Lucas, prevented Bridgend pulling closer with the game ending in defeat.
For Saturday’s match, Steve Jones makes a number of changes to the side selected last time out. Edd Howley and Caine Woolerton will look to continue where they left off last Saturday after they both got on the scoresheet – joined in the back three by Joseph Gatt. Youngsters Stuart Floyd Ellis and Tommy Morgan pair up in midfield, with Chris Williams and Jamie Murphy partnered at half back.
The front row comprises Owen Jordan, Lee Murphy and Rhodri Apsee and Chris John and Kieran Martin continue in the second row. In the back row, Zac O’Driscoll leads the side in the absence of club captain Nathan Edwards; in a trio alongside Hemi Barnes and Dafi Davies.
