21 Jan Team to face Newport in Cup Quarter Final
Bridgend Ravens return to action at Newport Stadium on Saturday with an Indigo Premiership Cup Quarter Final against Newport (2:30pm).
Ironically, Bridgend’s last outing was against the Black & Ambers in early December, when they suffered defeat at Newport Stadium. Since then, there’s been a Covid enforced break for Steve Jones’ squad. Wales started a phased return to Alert Level 0 restrictions last weekend, with the culmination of this seeing an unlimited cap on crowds allowed back into sporting events from this Friday.
The game will be the Ravens third tie against Newport already this season. An open pre-season encounter saw Newport win 28pts to 19 at the Timbuild Brewery Field, before victory last month at Newport Stadium 25pts to 9. Bridgend know they’ll need to give a much improved performance if they are to turn the tables on one of the Premiership’s outstanding sides so far this campaign.
Newport were able to fit in one more pre-shutdown game in; a very impressive 30pts to 25 win at the Talbot Athletic Ground against Aberavon on December 18th.
Still feeling the effects of injuries and unavailability, the Bridgend side features a number of changes from the one which last played in December. Tyler Williams makes a welcome return from injury, coming in at 15 for the absent Edd Howley. There’s a Bridgend debut for Carrick McDonough out wide, with Caine Woolerton occupying the other wide berth. Jamie Murphy is another back from the treatment room, selected at 12 alongside Tom Morgan in midfield. Matthew Jones and Chris Williams are the half backs.
Rhodri Apsee, Lee Murphy and Cai Lewis comprise Bridgend’s front row. Kieran Martin and Matthew Davies make up the second row, with Zac O’Driscoll, Aled Evans and Ospreys youngster Morgan Strong the back row.
