Bridgend Ravens have strengthened their forward options ahead of the new season with the addition of hooker Lee Murphy from Bridgend Athletic.

28 year old Murphy joins up with Steve Jones’ squad to add depth to the pool of hookers at the club. When he’s not playing for Bridgend Ravens, Lee will be available to turn out for Bridgend Athletic on a dual registration basis.

The latest player to progress along the development pathway, Murphy has played the majority of his rugby career for Bridgend Athletic. Lee started out at ‘the Ath’ at just six years old and eventually graduated to the senior side. Lee was a part of the famous 2008/09 Welsh Youth League and Cup double winning side which also contained a number of players that would go on to represent Bridgend.

Away from his time with Bridgend Athletic, he had a brief stint at Maesteg between 2011 and 2012, before he spent a year in Australia playing rugby in Sydney. Since his return from the Southern Hemisphere, he has represented Bridgend Athletic during their campaigns in Division 1. A vastly experienced operator, Lee made his 100th Bridgend Athletic senior appearance in their final game before lockdown, against Maesteg Celtic.

After signing for Bridgend Ravens, Lee commented ‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to play for my hometown club. I spent a lot of my childhood at the Brewery watching Bridgend so I’m really excited to get going.

I know a few of the lads already but I’m looking forward to getting to know the rest of the boys and really testing myself when pre-season finally gets underway.’

Team Manager, Ed Griffith, was pleased to see Lee join up with Bridgend as the strong relationship between Bridgend Ravens and Bridgend Athletic continues. ‘We are really pleased to give the opportunity to another local player in Lee who comes highly recommended by coaches and management at Bridgend Athletic.

He is someone that we have monitored for some time who has caught the eye through his on the field performances and the many club accolades he’s collected.

He is an abrasive type player who we feel will flourish in our environment which will provide him with a platform to test himself at a higher level.

We acknowledge the vital role being played by clubs in the Borough in developing players and allowing them opportunities to have a crack at Premiership level, and who knows even further.’
