05.05.08 - LET'S END THE SEASON
ON A HIGH!!!
With the last game of the season fast approaching,
let's all make an effort and give The Ravens a good send off and a well
deserved victory in their last league game of the season away against
Glamorgan Wanderers on Wednesday 7th May (Kick off 7.15pm)It's been a
hard season, but there has been no lack of effort from the players, while
all the coaching staff and behind the scene volunteers have worked tremendously
hard in what has been a tough season. Let's support the team for one
last time, as there is a chance of finishing a place one better
than last season.
Let's not also forget that there are a few players and coaches who are
heading for pastures new - with Head Coach Chris Stephens (after 13 years
service as a coach and player) and Brendan Roach leaving the Ravens due
to increasing work and family commitments, while Mike Powell is leaving
to join London Welsh as he looks to further his career. Let's give these
guys the recognition they deserve as they have served the Ravens wonderfully
well during their time with us.
If you wish to travel to Glamorgan Wanderers for our final game of the
season on Wednesday please contact Simon Green on: 07719 889364 ASAP.
Bus will leave the Riverside Tavern at 6pm, price to travel will be £5
for Adults & £2.50 for Juniors with a extra £1 charge
for non-supporters club members.

START ASDA STORE LAUNCH
Bridgend Ravens’ captain Gareth David will
literally ‘kick start’ the celebrations to mark the launch
of the new ASDA store in the town…by kicking a rugby ball over
the roof of the store! The launch, at 10am on March 31st, is the culmination
of months of planning for the 60,000 sq ft store on Coychurch Road, which
has cost over £7M
and created 400 local jobs for Bridgend.

A number of local dignitaries will
also attend the launch, including Welsh Assembly Member for Bridgend
and leader of the House, Carwyn Jones, AM, Bridgend Council Leader
Cheryl Green, the Mayor, Councillor Mari Jones, and Craig Lambourne,
the town’s
Youth Mayor. Entertainment will be provided by a fire eater and a face
painter, while Saxophics, a talented quartet of musicians from the
6th form at Brynteg Comprehensive School, will be playing a mixture
of jazz, swing and ragtime music.
ASDA Bridgend general store manager
Steve Maher is raring to go: “All
colleagues are really looking forward to the big day. Everyone’s
worked exceptionally hard and I think the people of Bridgend will be
very pleased indeed with what we’ve got on offer. We just can’t
wait to open our doors to our neighbours in the town”. 22.03.08 - RAVENS 21 v MAESTEG 18

Update on the injury list : Chris Tossell
continues with his rehabilitation and it is still a number of weeks before
Chris is able to take an active role. Gareth Knox is to have an operation
to set his broken nose sustained during the Aberavon game and is expected
to be unavailable for 6 weeks. Mark David has been given the all clear
after his shoulder operation and is available for selection.
Squad Update : Ieuan Dobbs has been successful in his application to join
the Fire Service and is going through his basic recruit training. As a
result he needs to remain injury free until the end of Dec and will not
be available for selection. The management fully support Ieuan's situation.
Scott Baldwin who has initially played on permit from Bridgend Athletic
to cover Ieuan's unavailability has been transferred and is now a fully
registered squad member.
The planned review of the squad at the end of October has been carried
out and Huw Alford and Gareth John have been released from the squad. Bridgend
Ravens wish them both success in their playing future.

11.09.07 - HOW YOU CAN HELP BRIDGEND RAVENS
This notice is to advise all supporters
and friends of Bridgend Ravens of the efforts being made to support “The
Ravens” and how you could be involved for the 2007/2008 season.
As you are most probably aware, The Ravens were formerly known as Bridgend
Rugby who, along with Pontypridd, achieved elevated status by becoming
the Celtic Warriors - a Regional Team. At this time they enjoyed the support
from the local community but, unfortunately with the demise of a Regional
side operating out of the Brewery Field, The Ravens, of late, have been
somewhat devoid of support. In an attempt, therefore, to re-address this
situation, we are endeavouring to resurrect a hospitality package that
proved very successful in past years. This will take the form of a pre-match
meal to include match ticket at a cost of between £25 - £35
per person depending on the offering of a particular game. For those of
you who are season ticket holders, the price will be adjusted accordingly.
All proceeds from the sale of these tables will be donated directly to
the Bridgend Ravens.
Should you be interested in booking a table
of 10 (or individually) then please contact Linda as soon as possible
on either 01656 741038 or 07840 878431
or email lindaingram02@aol.com
who will be delighted to take your bookings.
The schedule of home games for the booking of tables is as follows but
should there be interest shown for any other home matches then we will
endeavour to meet that demand also:
Cardiff 13th October
Aberavon 20th October
Neath 8th December
Ebbw Vale 12th January
Llanelli 19th January
Swansea 14th March (Friday)
Maesteg 22nd March
It cannot be overly stressed how grateful we would be for your support.
Thank you - Bridgend Ravens Marketing Team
10.09.07 - Bridgend Ravens 15 v Newport 27
NEWPORT BANISH THEIR BREWERY FIELD GHOSTS
Sep 10 2007
Western Mail
Thanks to the boot of outside half James
Dixon, Newport reversed the trend of recent seasons by winning at the
Brewery Field. Their last three visits have brought heavy defeats with
the Ravens ahead 100-21 on points but the Black and Ambers brought a simple
and effective game plan this time and the former Maesteg pivot played
it to perfection. The Ravens tried hard to run the ball in the style they
have always adopted but the Newport defence was generally too good and
there were countless mistakes by both sides and the fussy whistle of referee
David Bodily didn’t help the flow. The Ravens led briefly through
a classic try by Bevington but Dixon ground them down as he collected
17 points from that cultured right boot.
03.09.07 - ANOTHER BLACK DAY AT THE GNOLL FOR BRIDGEND
Sep 3 2007
by Phil Blanche, Western Mail
Neath 42-6 Bridgend Ravens
WHAT Bridgend would give to have some of
the quality that champions Neath once more possess. The Ravens gave it
their best shot at a ground they last achieved victory on February 13,
1982, but it was never going to be enough. While the Blacks have made
high-calibre signings, Bridgend have been forced to cut their cloth and
give youth its head. Teenage back rowers Rory Pitman and Jonathan Jones
hold out hope for the future, but it was asking a lot of them to compete
against the likes of Wales Sevens stars Lee Beach and James Merriman.
Captain Beach and Merriman were catalysts in a Neath victory that was
accompanied by a bonus point.
Fly-half Arwel Thomas, who collected 15 points with the boot, and wing
Kevin James were the others who stood out, while replacement centre Stephen
Thomas was a high-profile impact player. “Hopefully, it will soon
become a case of the chances that we missed out on here being taken,”
said Neath’s new senior coach Jason Forster, who switched from Doncaster
Knights back in June. “But all the hard work that the squad performed
during the summer came to fruition. “Special attention was paid
to organisational skills – following the pre-season defeat against
Plymouth Albion – and it was great to make a statement on the opening
day of the season.” Bridgend team manager Hugh Williams-Jones pointed
to the difference in quality between the respective squads. “Neath
have obviously recruited well this summer and they deserved victory,”
he said. “Bridgend don’t possess any superstars, but what
we have got are players who want to represent the club. “I felt
we pressurised Neath during the second half and steadier finishing would
have seen us get a few tries. “We look to play an enjoyable 15-man
game and the way the ball was moved and retained provided plenty of encouragement.”
The only time Bridgend seemed capable of avoiding a 27th successive Gnoll
defeat was when captain and full-back Gareth David landed two early penalties.
But two first-half tries from James and a touchdown from wing partner
Aled Bevan sent the Blacks into a clear 28-6 lead at the turnaround. Replacement
centre Stephen Thomas registered the bonus-point try in the 50th minute,
only for the Ravens to manage territorial advantage for 25 minutes without
scoring. In the final minute, wing James – who returned to Neath
from Cornish Pirates a year ago – sailed over for a hat-trick try.
31.08.07- RAVENS TEAM VERSUS NEATH ... and don't
forget, BRING SOMETHING BLUE!!!
Bridgend Ravens are pleased to announce
the following team for the Principality Building Society Premiership opener
against Neath at the Gnoll on September 1st. The Ravens are pleased to
give competitive debuts to centres Paul Smith and Gareth Howells, along
with winger Gareth John, Outside Half Gareth Knox and scrum half Jonathan
Hooper. Also making his debut is flanker Ioan Cunningham, who has transferred
to the Ravens from Llanelli RFC. Other players in line to make their debuts
by featuring from the bench are ex-Welsh international prop Peter Rogers,
hooker Daryll Harvey, back rower Jonathan Jones and scrum half Lee Ronan.

29.08.07 - THE PAST, PRESENT AND HOPES FOR THE FUTURE
by Carwyn Jones AM
I first went to a Bridgend game in September
1975. It rained, so much so that as a glasses wearer I didn’t see
much of the game from the terrace. We lost 12-3 to Cardiff, and the fact
that we played in gold jerseys gave me a lifelong belief that if we played
in gold then we lost. I remember the 1978 game against the All Blacks,
beaten but not disgraced. It rained again, but my main memory was the
first line-out when the New Zealand pack seemed to be huge compared to
ours. Better days came with the two cup final wins in 1979 and 1980, and
then we beat the 1981 Australians, courtesy of four Gary Pearce penalties.
We should have won by a mile.
In 1990 we were back
in the final, losing 16-10 to Neath, which given the fact that most of
my mates were from Neath at that stage was sheer purgatory. Our try that
day was scored by a certain Kevin Ellis. I wonder what happened to him!
Then we won the last professional premiership title, a sweet win against
Neath, in the company of my Neath mates. Let’s hope for a good season
to come. It would be nice to have a day out in Cardiff for the final.
We need to have something to celebrate this year, because it's going to
be tough for Wales in the World Cup. I think the French are looking good
for it, given the All Blacks’ reputation for choking. I think a
northern hemisphere win (not England this time!) would be good. The Ravens
are in the blood for me, and long may that continue.

Wales, or just rugby in general, just get in touch via info@bridgendravens.co.uk
28.08.07 - MOSELEY 45 v RAVENS 21
Arrived at a very nice, open and baking
hot Moseley RFC after some trouble with traffic on the A449 at Monmouth.
Suffice it to say the delay was enough to make some of the fans more desperate
for a cigarette to resort to jogging alongside the traffic jam whilst
having a fag!!
Moseley RFC was very well equipped although
it was suggested that they were sponsored by port-a-cabin!! Gareth David
led the Ravens out to a warm welcome and the seasons first real chanting
of Bridge,Bridge,Bridge from the contingent of 30 or so Ravens fans stood
behind a large Welsh Flag draped on the railings.
Bridgend started brightly and for the first 10 minutes competed well with
Moseley not having much of the game but after gaining a penalty just short
of the Bridgend line, ex-Raven, Matthew Jones, whilst lining up a kick
to the touchline, changed his mind and whilst the ravens discussed a line
out that never came he executed a perfect cross kick for the Moseley right
wing to gather in the corner and score the opening try.
What followed was a good display of typical English rugby. Moseley gained
posession and depending on field position either formed an extremely effective
driving maul or passed to Matthew Jones to kick for position, who with
the wind at his back, continued to have a great game and couldn't really
put a foot wrong. Bridgend were not helped by a stuttering lineout and
coughing up some turnover ball in vulnerable positions and by a worrying
knock on the promising young prop Phil Price's shoulder to force an early
substitution. Some of Bridgend's defence to prevent certain scores was
at time heroic but equally at times fragile. During this period of heavy
defending Gareth Williams was yellow carded for slowing the ball down
at the ruck area and on one occasion illustrating Moseley's frustration
with the never say die defence a large scuffle broke out resulting in
a penaly clearance kick for Bridgend. Richard radford should gain a particular
mention for 2 miraculous try saving tackles within 2 minutes but unfortunatley
at half time the score was Moseley 35 Bridgend 0 with most of Moseley's
points emanating from catch and drive at the line out and no sign of anything
different in the second half.
The second half started with both teams flying into each other with the
same intensity as the 1st but the score remaind unchanged. Following some
substitutions by both sides however Bridgend put together a fantastic
display of typical Welsh rugby and through an attractive flowing move
using most of the players on the park wing Gareth John crossed for a try
which gained the appreciation of the Moseley crowd and the adulation fo
the Bridgend gang who began baying for more. A few minutes later they
were not dissapointed when Gareth John crossed again from a similar example
of attractive creative rugby. A further Bridgend score was added by a
strong run from Ioan Cunningham and more could have come but for the touch
line and handling errors following strong charges from Rory Pitman and
Marvin Thomas. After a series of Bridgend quick tap penalties the Moseley
flanker was sin binned for tackling well within 10m of the tap penalty.
Despite Bridgend dominating most of the second half Moseley scored once
more and the fight back was beyond Bridgend's reach. Final score Moseley
42 Bridgend 21. Bridgend winning the second half 21-7!! Despite it being
a full blooded and bruising encounter Bridgend came through largely unscathed
and Phil Price's injury apart (which will need to be assesed) the managment
were happy to confirm no major injury concerns to worry them in the build
up to next weeks league opener against Neath at the "beloved"
Gnoll.
Thanks to Moseley for a great day and a good welcome and thanks too to
Matthew Jones for taking our barracking in such good spirit (and returning
it too) and then coming over for a chat at the end. Exactly what Rugby
Union is all about. Friendly rivalries on the pitch and just the friends
part off the pitch!! Special mention too to Mike Diamond who gave us advanced
warning by text of a hold up on the way back enabling the supporters bus
to avoid the traffic and make it back to the pub at a reasonable time.

team. Bridgend now hope to take the team spirit and running rugby into
their final pre-season friendly fixture against Moseley next saturday
(25th August). There is a bus going, please see below article titled SUPPORTERS

Friendlies
Just to confirm, kick off in the game against Llantrisant taking place
on August 17th 2007 is at 19:15pm. With regards to the game against Moseley,
the format of the game is a standard pre-season friendly. We know that
a few supporters had a few queries about whether or not the game was taking
the form of a game featuring 3 periods of 20 minutes. This is not the
case. It will be a game of two halves. No pun intended! See below for
transport information if you're interested in travelling to Moseley.
International Tickets We
haveva limited number of tickets available for the Wales internationals
against both Argentina (18th August) and France (26th August). If you're
interested, please call Rhyd on 01656 662747 or 07855 758725. Argentina
tickets are able to be picked up at the game against Llantrisant (17th
August), whilst those of you interested in France tickets, you can pick
them up at a time convenient to you.
15.08.07 - SUPPORTERS TRANSPORT TO LLANTRISANT AND
MOSELEY
Due to most wanting to go by car having
a bus to Llantrisant on Friday 17th August is unlikely but Simon Green
will let those who have booked know tomorrow. We do have a number of places
booked for Moseley, so if you do wish to travel for that game please call
Simon Green on 07719 889364 ASAP. Hoping to keep the price between £10-£12,
