Bridgend 13-33 Ebbw Vale

By Rhyd Cole | 13/02/2018

Bridgend Ravens bowed out of the WRU National Cup at the last 16 stage following a convincing defeat to Ebbw Vale on Tuesday at the Morganstone Brewery Field.

Dorian Jones starred for the Visitors, contributing 16 points from the tee as well as showing his class in open play. The Steelmen had too much power up front, racing out to a 27 point to 3 half time lead, leaving the Ravens with an almost impossible second half task, despite the undoubted effort.

Jones notched the first points from the tee before Jacob Lloyd added Bridgend's only first half points at the six minute mark.

Ebbw Vale went on to dominate, driving a scrum for a penalty try with little over 10 minutes played. Wing Toby Fricker twice touched down out wide following two perfectly executed kicks, one cross field and one deft grubber. Jones didn't look like missing all evening from the tee, converting the two Fricker tries and adding two first half penalties.

An improved second half saw Bridgend out score their opponents two tries to nil, but the Ravens were not able to produce the unlikeliest of comebacks.

Dorian Jones added a drop goal early in the second half before Bridgend finally strung some positive phases together. Fullback Jonathan Phillips touched down out wide to register the Hosts’ first try of the match.

Jones added a penalty as the hour mark approached, bringing the fly halves tally to 16 in what was an impressive performance from the Dragon.

Late in the match, replacement Ollie Evans drove over from close range for the Ravens’ second try, however it was a case of too little too late for Bridgend as the Ebbw Vale first half performance was enough to send the Steelmen into the Quarter Final stage of the WRU National Cup.
