Bridgend Ravens sign Ryan Owen and Greg George
By Rhyd Cole | 13/05/2013
Bridgend Ravens can confirm that Ryan Owen (Wing) and Greg George (Hooker) have signed for the club ahead of the start of the 2013-14 season.
6' 2" wing Ryan Owen has put pen to paper after two seasons with Bedwas. Born in Cardiff, Owen has represented Bedford Blues, Newport, Bedwas and Pontypool previously, whilst also gaining honours for Wales U16, U18 and England Students.
At 14st 6lbs, 26 year old Owen will add a considerable physical presence to the Ravens back line and upon signing at the Riverside Hardware Brewery Field, Owen was clearly impressed with what he saw at Bridgend Ravens.
"My first impressions of Bridgend Ravens was that of a club with great aspirations and a key focus on being professional. I hope to bring a maturity and experience from my years in the Welsh Premiership, English championship and my time with Leicester Tigers to help contribute to and underpin the hard work which has already started in preparation for next season. It is a privilege to be part of a club with a great history and I am very much looking forward to the coming season."
Hooker Greg George also joins, after three seasons with Llanelli. Having recently appeared in the Varsity Final win against Cardiff University at the Millennium Stadium alongside Jonathon Vaughan, Chris Francis and Ben Thomas, he bolsters a front row that has already seen Owen Williams and Ashleigh James re-sign for next season. Swansea-born George has played 22 games for Llanelli to date, winning 15, scoring 2 tries in the process.
George has high hopes for the season, and is looking forward to getting underway at pre-season training. "I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to play for the Ravens and I'm looking forward to being a part of a young and progressive side who play with plenty of ambition. Hopefully next season we can finish in the top half of the league and really challenge the top teams. It will be nice to step onto the Brewery Field with the crowd behind me instead of against me for a change!!!"
Head Coach Ben Rose was delighted on confirming the signings. "The boys are proven performers at premiership level and bring a further competition and experience to our young squad. Ryan has played in the premiership for both Bedwas and Newport and is an experienced back three player who brings a great attitude to our environment along with a great deal of quality on the pitch."
"Greg George is a great prospect at hooker with a proven ability at premiership level. He is looking to get an opportunity at the next level as is the case with most of our players. Greg will bring competition to Ashleigh James for the hooker's jersey which is healthy for both players and the squad."
