Match Report

Bridgend 10-14 Ebbw Vale

Bridgend Ravens battled hard at a rain soaked Morganstone Brewery Field, claiming a losing bonus point against title chasing Ebbw Vale.

A slow start to the match proving costly for the Ravens in a familiar tale to the clash between the two sides back in September, where Bridgend lost out by just a point on that occasion.

A first half that was almost all Ebbw saw the visitors steadily build an 11 point halftime lead. A try after 12 minutes opened the scoring, the Steelmen resorting to their renowned driving maul saw Kristian Parker touch down.

The impressive Rhys Jones then added two penalties as the half went on, stretching the visitors lead to 11 with the final five minutes of the half to play.

As halftime approached, Cai Evans looked to have landed Bridgend's first points of the match, however despite the fly half clearly believing his penalty split the uprights, the referee and assistants decided otherwise.

Five minutes in to the second half, Jones added his third penalty the hand Ebbw Vale a fourteen point lead, but Bridgend dug deep and set about mounting a comeback.

With ten minutes of the half gone, Bridgend begun to build into the Ebbw 22. Stuart Floyd Ellis showed his excellent footwork to make the half break and the centre’s offload found Cai Evans. The fullback drew his man and set Ashley Evans away with a one on one out wide, the winger had a lot to do but managed to dive over in the corner for his first Bridgend try since 2014, having rejoined the club earlier in the season. Fullback Evans landed a sublime touchline conversion to drag Bridgend back to within 7.

Bridgend, now dominating possession, continued to throw everything at the Steelmen, but the visitors defence stood firm. Cai Evans added three more from the tee with just over an hour played, and Bridgend headed into the final twenty minutes looking for a winner.

Despite going close on a couple of occasions, a mixture of handling errors and indiscipline ended up costing Bridgend who could have secured a victory against all odd. The Ravens didn't find the score needed and had to settle for a hard earned, but potentially invaluable, bonus point.
