Match Report

Neath 18-11 Bridgend

Bridgend Ravens slumped to defeat at bottom placed Neath to throw the relegation battle wide open.

Having defeated Swansea, following an excellent draw with Llandovery, the Ravens tails were up and many tipped them to continue Neath’s dismal run of defeats. However, the Welsh All Blacks dug deep to earn a deserved victory in front of their long suffering home support.

The wind favoured the Ravens in the first period which saw them take a lead into the interval. Neath scored the only try of the half through Alec Jenkins after just five minutes. Langdon hooked the conversion, and from then on the visitors dominated.

For all their dominance, Bridgend could not break through the determined Neath defence. Luckily, Ross Jones was on form. Despite missing a long distance penalty, he slotted a drop goal and a penalty to put the Ravens in charge at the half way mark.

HT: Neath 5-6 Bridgend

Bridgend now played towards the shed end and into a vicious wind. Langdon put Neath ahead within two minutes of the second half, but Bridgend did not go slack. An excellent move from the backs saw Chris Williams finally crash over for the Ravens; the wind took Ross Jones conversion wide of the uprights.

Neath did not look like a side short of confidence from the restart. They hunted down the Ravens ball carriers into making a number of errors. From there, permit back Luke Williams was able to break the line, evading tackles to score under the posts. Dai Langdon slotted the conversion to put the blacks in the lead.

Neath had their tails up, and attacked with intent. Lloyd Evans was sent to the bin which provided Neath with the chance to put themselves further in front – a chance Langdon did not fail to take. It looked ominous for the visitors with ten minutes remaining.

To their credit, Bridgend battled on and continued to attack the Neath line to no avail. The Welsh All Blacks held on to earn a deserved victory and bring an end to their horrible run of nine consecutive defeats in the Premiership.

Bridgend Scorers: Try: Chris Williams. Penalty: Ross Jones. Drop Goal: Ross Jones.
