Match Report

Bridgend 16-16 Llandovery

Bridgend Ravens salvaged a draw against high flying Llandovery at the Bridgend Ford Brewery Field.

At half time the Ravens seemed down and out, trailing by ten points. But an excellent second half comeback saw them earn a draw. The second half performance may have even merited a victory for the struggling home side.

Bridgend were slow to get out of the blocks, and after six minutes Bryn Griffiths crossed for the Drovers. The excellent James Garland kicked the extras.

The rest of the half was stalemate. Bridgend were forced into a lot of defending, including some excellent last ditch efforts from Adam O’Driscoll and Nathan Edwards. Ross Jones kicked the home side clear on numerous occasions as they failed to get any meaningful attacking position.

As the half drew to a close, James Garland kicked another penalty following some handbags on half way involving Ashleigh James. James avoided a yellow card for all of a minute, following an infringement at a ruck.

HT: Bridgend 0-10 Llandovery (0-1T).

The Ravens emerged from the tunnel for the second half a totally different side. Although Garland kicked Llandovery into a stronger lead, Ross Jones reduced the deficit within two minutes.

Bridgend now had their tails up and were unlucky not to score, owing to handling errors and some great defending from the West Walians.

As Bridgend embarked on another attack, Tom Grabham sliced through the visiting defence, breaking tackles to crash over for a score under the posts. This was converted by Jones to put Bridgend within touching distance of the Drovers.

The closing twenty minutes belonged to the home side. Although Garland seemed to have put the game beyond the hosts with another penalty, Ross Jones slotted a stupendous effort to put the game back on a knife edge.

With the score at 13-16 to Llandovery and the game well into injury time, the game seemed over. But some persistent Ravens tackling earned them a penalty in the Llandovery twenty two. Ross Jones calmly stepped up to salvage a well earned draw for the home side.
