Bridgend Ravens suffered another away day defeat in Gwent, as they succumbed to a handsome 28-13 defeat to Newport at Rodney Parade.
The Ravens put up a decent first half showing, but were blown away by the impressive Black & Ambers in the second period.
The first half was a close affair. The wind swirled into the faces of the Ravens, and it was Bridgend who almost struck first, but James Dixon put a penalty wide. This was punished soon after, as Newport got the ball wide for Ethan Davies to crash over in the corner. O’Driscoll missed the extras.
Bridgend needed to fight back and some determined forward play got them good field position. Gethin Robinson was yellow carded for Newport just before hooker Ash James drove over to level the scores. James Dixon added a wonderful conversion from out wide to give Bridgend the lead.
A reoccurring problem for the Ravens this season has been controlling the game when in the lead. This flaw was exposed by Newport, who regained the lead just five minutes later with a score from Adam Brown. Again, O’Driscoll missed the conversion, but did add a penalty a few minutes later to stretch the lead. This penalty came after Alex Jones was yellow carded for an offside offence.
With half time looming, Bridgend replaced James Dixon with Ashley Evans. James had to rush off to hospital to be at the birth of his daughter, after his wife was taken into labour during the first half. The last kick of the half went to Ross Jones, who slotted an excellent penalty to bring Bridgend within touching distance.
HT: Newport 13-10 Bridgend
The second half was a dire affair, one which Bridgend fans will want to forget. The period was error ridden by both sides, as wind and rain disrupted the flow of the game.
Newport went on to score two more tries to gain a well deserved bonus point victory. Lee Beach and Ashton Hewitt were the heroes for the hosts, along with the boot of Geraint O’Driscoll. A miserable day at the office was compounded with Jon Vaughan receiving a straight red card for a high tackle with five minutes remaining.
It ended in a comprehensive victory for the Black & Ambers, 28 points to 13.
