Match Report

Bridgend Ravens 31 v Bridgend Athletic 3

Bridgend Ravens are into the next round of the SWALEC CUP thanks to a comfortable 31-3 win against near rivals Bridgend Athletic at the Riverside Hardware Brewery Field.

With a number of people working hard pre game to ensure the match would go ahead, it was the away side who opened the scoring, through the ever reliable boot of Steve Lewis. That was as good as it got for the Green and Golds, as Bridgend's power, experience and cutting edge ensured there wouldn't be a shock in front of a good crowd. Rhys Ward-Jones was the first to benefit from the dominance of the home side, as he finished well, before Tom Morgan scored The Ravens' first score, immediately after returning to the field after being given a yellow card to ensure the home side led 14-3 at the break.

Bridgend's domination up front was soon to the fore, with the front row of Ken Dowding, livewire hooker Ashleigh James and Owen Williams getting the better of their counter parts in the Athletic front row. With the conditions under foot beginning to tell, credit must be given to both teams for trying to play an expansive game, and it was this that led to further tries for the impressive Ward-Jones, and replacements Andrew Waite and Scott Hicks to ensure The Ravens are in the hat for the next round.

After this performance and result, despite being without 18 players through injury, Ospreys, Wales U20 and Wales Sevens calls, Bridgend will be hoping for home advantage again in the next round as they look for an extended cup run this season.
