Ravens team to face Bridgend Athletic (h)

Bridgend Ravens have been forced to test their strength in depth this weekend as no fewer than 18 players are unavailable for selection for Saturday's (KO 2:30pm) SWALEC cup derby against Bridgend Athletic.

Despite this, the Ravens have named a strong starting XV to take on their fellow townsmen, with a combined appearance total of well over 100 for the season. It is also testament to the quality in the ranks as the majority of those unavailable aren't on the injury list, but rather have been called up for regional or national representation.

With the Six Nations looming, it is a chance for many young players to prove their worth at regional level. The Ospreys have battled hard after a turbulent start to the season and will be keen to maintain their position in the top four of the RaboDirect PRO12 despite losing several key players to international duty. Many young Ravens players have bedded in to the side well in recent months and will be crucial to the side over the next few weeks.

For this fixture alone, the Ravens are without the likes of Jamie Murphy, Ross Jones (also injured), Tom Grabham, Nathan Edwards, Tom Habberfield, Arthur Ellis, Lloyd Peers, Marc Thomas and Matthew Dwyer (Ospreys); as well as Daniel Suter, Shaun O'Rourke and Ashley Evans (Wales U20s). Luke Morgan (Wales Sevens) is also missing with new signing Dai Griggs cup tied after playing for Tondu earlier in the competition.

Kyle Barrett, Adam Hillier-Rees, Chris Owen and Rod Apsee are all on the injury list.

Lewis Williams returns at outside half after missing The Ravens' great 24-14 win against Cardiff in the B&I Cup, Williams partners namesake Chris at half back, with the two Rhys's on the wings in Ward-Jones and Thomas. In the centre Sam Campbell joins Steve Winn, with Ben Thomas at full back.

In the pack, Ken Dowding, Ashleigh James and Owen Williams make up a strong front row unit, with Alex Jones and Lee Davies providing further experience in the second row. In the back row, captain Jonny Vaughan is joined by Owain Lloyd and former Athletic player Tom Morgan.

The replacements bench will be selected from the following: Ashley Evans, Glen Lewis, Lloyd Evans, Andrew Waite, Scott Hicks, Matthew Llewellyn, Josh Jacas, Jonathan Thomas, Chris Francis, and Gary Carpenter.
